Homes with several dogs can place extra demands on area rugs. Pet hair, body oils, tracked-in soil, saliva, and repeated accidents may build up through the pile and reach the backing or foundation.
For this Desert Hot Springs project, the customer had many dogs in the home, and several rugs had developed strong, persistent odors that did not improve with routine vacuuming or surface deodorizing.
Why the Odor Kept Returning
Pet odor is not always caused by one visible accident. In a multi-dog household, contamination can develop gradually across several areas of the rug.
Urine may pass through the face fibers and spread underneath, creating a larger affected area than what appears on top. Hair, dander, oils, and soil can also become trapped inside dense pile and contribute to the overall smell.
Inspecting Each Rug for Pet Contamination
Our rug specialists examined the front and back of each piece to identify staining, odor concentration, fiber type, dye stability, backing condition, and signs of previous spot treatment.
This evaluation allowed us to determine which rugs could be safely washed and where focused pet odor treatment was needed before the main cleaning process.
Deep Treatment Instead of Fragrance
The goal was not to cover the smell with perfume. Contaminated sections received targeted treatment intended to loosen odor-causing residue within the pile and foundation.
Dry soil, pet hair, and loose debris were removed before washing. Each rug then received a complete off-site wash and thorough rinsing to flush away released contamination and cleaning residue.

Complete Drying and Final Odor Inspection
Rugs must be fully dry before odor-removal results can be evaluated accurately. Moisture can temporarily change how a rug smells, especially when contamination has reached the backing.
After controlled drying, each rug was checked again for remaining odor, staining, texture, and overall cleanliness. The pile was then groomed before the rugs were prepared for return.
A Fresher Home for the Customer and Their Dogs
The completed treatment significantly improved the freshness of the rugs and removed the heavy odor that had developed in the home. The rugs returned clean, dry, and ready for continued use in a busy pet-friendly household.
