What Causes Dry Rot in Rugs?

Dry rot is a serious form of structural damage that weakens a rug’s foundation. Despite its name, dry rot usually begins with moisture. Water, pet urine, repeated spills, or prolonged dampness can weaken cotton foundation threads until they become brittle and break apart.

The damage may remain hidden beneath the pile for years. By the time a rug develops holes, cracks, or splitting, the foundation may already be severely deteriorated.

Common Causes of Rug Dry Rot

Water exposure is one of the most common causes. A leaking pipe, overflowing appliance, wet floor, or improperly dried cleaning can leave moisture trapped inside a rug. Rugs placed over damp concrete or stored in humid conditions may also be affected.

Pet urine can create similar damage. Repeated accidents introduce moisture and acidic contamination into the foundation. Over time, these deposits may weaken cotton fibers, affect dyes, and create permanent odor.

Plant pots are another frequent source of dry rot. Water can slowly seep beneath the container without being noticed, leaving the rug damp for extended periods. Heavy furniture may hide the affected area until the rug is moved.

Signs a Rug May Have Dry Rot

A dry-rotted rug may feel unusually stiff, brittle, or weak in a particular area. The foundation may crack when the rug is bent, and small holes may appear with little warning. You may also notice discoloration, mildew odor, missing pile, or a section that tears easily when handled.

Avoid pulling, folding, or aggressively vacuuming a suspected weak area. Additional movement can turn a small damaged section into a much larger tear.

Can a Dry-Rotted Rug Be Repaired?

Cleaning cannot restore foundation fibers that have already deteriorated. However, professional cleaning may be needed to remove contamination before restoration begins. Depending on the rug’s condition and value, a specialist may reinforce the weak foundation, rebuild missing sections, or reweave the damaged design.

Not every severely damaged rug can be restored economically. Early inspection offers the best chance of limiting further loss.
