Abrash is commonly found in Persian, Turkish, Afghan, and other hand-knotted rugs. It usually develops when a weaver changes to a new batch of dyed wool while making the rug. Even when the same dye formula is used, small differences in the wool, water, temperature, or dyeing time can produce a slightly different shade.

Why Abrash Is Part of a Handmade Rug’s Character

Traditional rugs are often woven over many months. During that time, the weaver may use wool dyed on different days or gathered from different animals. These natural variations create horizontal color changes as the rug progresses on the loom.
